Kincaid: Craig is in the snowcat working the Dark Lekisch this morning. He said the snow has dried out a great deal and it’s cooperating much better than yesterday. He plans to hit the Sisson as well. No tracks will be set at this point.

Hillside:  Looks like a few of our guys track packed the trails yesterday afternoon. This is the first step in base development and the conditions are still rough with bare spots here and there, so don’t take your good skis.

Beach Lake Trails:  The crew track packed the majority of the park yesterday. No snow in the tunnels yet. They will be out again today with the compaction wing on the snowmachine trying to smooth things up and put some comb down.

We’re off to a good start but we’ll see what the forecast has in store for us for the rest of the week.  Enjoy!

Nordic Skiing Association of Anchorage Oct 29, 2024 by Friendly Report Bot

Winter has arrived! The reports are coming in with 3.5 inches on the Hillside, 7 inches in Chugiak and 13 inches at Kincaid…with more accumulation and drifting snow throughout the morning and early afternoon. Temperatures are predicted in the mid to upper 30’s. No grooming on the Hillside today but feel free to “ski it down.”  The crew in Chugiak will be track packing the trails at Beach Lake while the Kincaid crew will be doing some experimental grooming with the snowcat on the SML and if it’s successful (no dirt), they will migrate to the Lighted Loops. Otherwise, they will be track packing with snowmachines.  We’ll keep you posted, drive safely and have a great day!

Update: 9:30am: Craig is in the PB 600 working the Lighted Loops only, no track is being set. He has encountered some big, downed spruce on Jodhpur Loop and suspects there will be more.

Kincaid:  The Lighted loops have been track packed and snow machine groomed with the compaction wing. Enjoy!

Hillside:  The Lighted Loops, Double Bubble and Gasline have been track packed and snow machine groomed with the compaction wing. Matt says the results are “decent”.

Beach Lake Trails:  The majority of the trails have been both track packed and finished with the compaction wing. Conditions will be a bit lumpy and bumpy with ruts around some corners. Removed a huge downed tree on Yo-Yo’s so watch for twig debris. There is now a thin ribbon of snow through both tunnels. Hoping for about five more inches so we can start grooming with the snow cat. Ski with caution and have fun out there!

Cleared some small trees on Hilltop and Powder loops off of Sun Valley and end of Wendt toward swamp. Groomed as well as could be done with the heavy, icy snow. A couple sections of the Loops have large trees across trail that will need to be cleared with a chainsaw. It's nice out, just be cautious of branches at eye level.

Groomed Matanuska/Susitna loops, Pioneer, and Denali for both classic and skate. Plus Eska, stadium, etc. Excellent conditions! Probably a few chunky spots on steeper uphills on Denali due to the 1’ of new snow, but downhills should all be great. Enjoy your Sunday!

Margaux and Jodhpur held onto great conditions until sundown. Firm but not slick in the shadows. Mize with a lot of frozen lakes in the usual spots—looks like it got a little exciting when it was soft at midday! Only 1 by the soccer field required a detour. Should all set up great tomorrow morning with a groom. Thank you groomers!!

Hillside Feb 19, 2022 by Bart

Skated the Hillside and Besh Loops, and gasline trail. All were good -- groomers were able to get a layer of loose snow/ground ice on top of hardpack that was very fast but edge-able. A few small frozen pools existed on the loops but these were easy to avoid. Uphill coverage was decent for climbing. Classic grooves were a bit degraded but still holding up and were fast also. Use caution on the downhills! Skiing overall was good, especially considering all the recent high temperatures.

Kincaid Park Feb 19, 2022 by Jim

Surprisingly good classic skiing on the klister skis today throughout the park on the trails that got a groom! The Lake Loop was a great surprise as I appeared to be the first and only skier to take advantage of the new tracks for most of the loop, but for good reason: to access the Lake Loop from the lighted loops I had to work my way down S-turns on a hellishly icy and post-holed trail. The grooming starts at the bottom of the S-turns. There are other access points, such as Little Campbell Lake parking lot or the Raspberry road parking lot, but both of those will still require you to either ski in the 'wrong' direction on the trail or tackle the dreaded ungroomed S-turns. The Horseshoe Loop was also groomed and in nice shape, but with a few rough spots on the second half where the groomer obviously had a little trouble. Sunshine, corn snow, and pleasant temperatures really made it feel like the first day of spring skiing!

Westchester Lagoon Feb 19, 2022 by Sarah Schirack

Westchester Lagoon crust was almost done by 12:45pm. Heard/felt the wumpf with every glide. That said, it was a much better skate skiing option than the section of Coastal Trail nearby, which is a broken shoulder waiting to happen.

Kincaid Park: The skate lanes on Mize, Margaux’s and Jodhpur have been refreshed with the snow machine.  Enjoy!

Hillside: Matt groomed and set new track throughout the majority of the park this morning. The Richter and classic connector to the Bog have fresh groom and double track. He said the tracks are generally “good” on all trails, but cobbed up in some sections. There is not enough snow on the Ridge or the Bog trails to support the snow cat or set track at this time. Have a great Saturday!

Beach Lake Trails - Chugiak: Bill did the best he could and scratched up the majority of the park last night.  He said the frost heaves are terrible, and there isn’t anything he can to do fix them with the current amount of snow. About 40% of the trails are affected and some areas are worse than others.  It’s lumpy and bumpy out there, but skiable.

The trails at Eagle River HS and on Yosemite Dr. have been snow machine groomed.  Bill said they were hard packed by lots of foot traffic.  Have fun out there!

Kincaid Park Nov 18, 2020 by Jen B

Interesting experience yesterday on Margeaux's loop. After the big downhill in the beginning of the loop, the track was very bumpy, maybe from spreading some of the man made snow? After going through the tunnel, the small hill on the other side was extremely icy. Other than that, the grooming was great. I do have the upmost appreciation for the groomers! The main point of my posting is: on the rollercoaster part of Margeaux's, a women was skiing with her two dogs. When I asked if she knew that the trails were ski only, she stated, "I know." Too bad there's not a system where people could be fined or something. I don't ski on the ski only trails very often because of my dog. When I do, I expect that people will follow the rules. Also, I believe most people ski Margeaux's in a counter-clockwise direction. This is the way all the tracks are oriented when looking at the snow. At the end of the loop while going back into the stadium someone going the opposite way yelled at me for skiing in the wrong direction. In spite of all of this, grateful to be outside.

Tour of Anchorage Trail Nov 18, 2020 by Robin Beebee

Skate skied Chester Creek from Lake Otis area, APU, and Tour Trail up to Viewpoint knob. All fairly hardpacked, but outside the main bike groove on the fresh groom on the lower Tour Trail it's still soft. The big birch tree that fell across the APU trail has been removed - thanks! It may not be resort-quality but skate skiing through town in November without any rocks or bare ground is pretty awesome, lots of appreciation to the APU and NSAA groomers for getting out there!

Groomed one groomer width this morning. Had to run over twice to get a smooth groom and ran out of time to finish. Broadway is looking great as is the outhouse loop. Classic lanes are in all around. Did not groom Renshaws. Temp was a balmy 27 degrees at 11 am. Look out for some groomer debris due to hard Un groomed surface and the transition between un groomed and groomed surfaces. Kincaid Park Nov 16, 2020 by Russell Hood

Someone evidently took a vehicle for a joyride on the trails at Kincaid. The ruts left behind tell the story: Multiuse trail, several donuts on the turf field, a bit of the Coastal Trail, and then on up the Liekisch Trail. While wondering where they could have gained vehicle access I noticed the gate right in front of the caretaker's RV (are they still there?) was left wide open. I was tempted to close it and lock it but did not. Does the muni or NSAA know anything about this? Can they please close the gate so this might not happen again?

Thanks to all the awesome groomers out there for an amazing start to the season! I am sure your talents can fix nearly all of the damage done by this vehicle.

Kincaid Park: No new grooming today, the crew is making snow.  Have fun out there!

Hillside: Matt refreshed the skate lanes on the Lighted Loops, Service High, Double Bubble, Spencer and Gasline. He set new track on the Gasline but the cold base temperature impacted the quality…the tracks are skiable, but not the best.  Have a great Monday!

Beach Lake Trails - Chugiak: Well, for what’s it’s worth, Bill did the best he could to scratch up the thin and bumpy trails.  He hit the high traffic loops throughout the park but stayed away from the Christy and CHS as the base is a bit thinner due to more exposure. He used the cutter bar in an attempt to soften up the hard snow, but brought up dirt and rocks so he abandoned that effort.  Anyway, it is what it is until we get more snow. Also, there were some forestry folks doing some cutting and chipping on Main St. but the mess has been cleaned up.  They should be finished for the season.  Have a great day!

Bill groomed the Coyote Trails at MLMS this afternoon.  He said there has been a lot of foot traffic, decent coverage with a thin base.  Enjoy!

Upper Huffman Nov 15, 2020 by Skijoring Ladybugs

Skier and walker packed trails all over between Prospect Heights and Glen Alps. New trail adds some variety, though curves are better suited for bikes than skis (too tight a radius for long skis). Gasline and Powerline in good enough shape one can point downhill and glide without fear. White Spruce Trail is in great shape as a crossover. Watch for horses which I saw the past two outings.

Saw a flyer posted by State Parks that a dog was caught in an illegal snare in Hemlock Knob area, so keep your canines close. KTUU reported snares along the multiuse trail near Hilltop. No ethical trapper would be setting them in these areas even if they were legal, especially at today's fur prices (read today's Daily News column by Schandelmeier).

Eagle River Greenbelt Nov 15, 2020 by djt

Skied the Greenbelt to Barbara’s Falls. Parking lot side of the river has well packed trail which makes for not the best skiing, but fast downhills and it’s doable. A small ice bridge over the river exists thanks to a fallen tree and a few large ice blocks. Trail much better after this point, with plenty of fresh snow on either side of the bike tracks. Trail packed again around the falls. Okay for skiing. Great for fatbiking.

Beach Lake Trails - Chugiak Nov 15, 2020 by Peter Haeussler

The trails are in good shape! I skied most of the trails, and I'm guessing there were dragged once, and then skier-packed since then. The snow seemed rather thin, but there were no rocks at the surface and rare roots. I used my good skis and had no regrets about bringing them. Near the CHS tunnels, there are a lot of small branches on the trail due to a tree or two that fell, was cut down and removed. Perhaps some trail fairy's can bring some rakes and clean it up?! Get out there!

Hillside: Good news…the frost heaves are slowly being worked out and filled in!  There is fresh groom with track on the Spencer, Double Bubble, Gasline, Service Stadium and all Lighted Loops.  Watch out for shallow snow depth under spruce trees and the Spencer was groomed a bit narrow this time due to undeveloped base.  If you are skating, please be mindful not to ski over the classic tracks. Better-then-average multiuse skijoring potential for this early in the season, though.

ATTENTION SKIERS: A friendly reminder to be aware of all our new walking/biking trail users, especially this winter! People who found a brand new trail system this summer might not know that trails are ski only in winter. If you see a walker on the trail, have a friendly (though distanced) conversation. Tell them there are multi-use options from every trail head. Maybe even tell them about the great work NSAA does to keep our trails in tip top shape so we can ski this early! I prefer to assume they "don't know" rather than they "don't care," and politeness always goes a long way : ) Happy skiing!

Hillside Nov 11, 2020 by Russell Hood

Now that NSAA is grooming trails let's encourage/tell/request that fat bikers STAY OFF Spencer Loop!

I am a skier and a fat biker. Many of us do both. The ruts left behind by bikers (especially on the downhills just below Wall St.) are very unsafe. I get it - in the summer bikers do endless loops there so they can ride the boardwalk and hit the jumps and refine technique etc. That's great in the summer. But in the winter Spencer Loop is ski only. We don't want to encounter slow bikers traveling uphill on ski-only trails while we are going downhill at high speeds. This is very unsafe!

I hope the STA folks are hearing this.

Archangel Road Nov 11, 2020 by Kruser

Excellent grooming! No drifting at all in classic tracks. Occasionally a soft spot skating but really good skiing. DOT is working the road. 30F. Thanks DOT and MSSC!

Independence Mine Nov 11, 2020 by JM

Thank you for including Hatcher Pass road conditions, that is helpful info.

Government Peak Recreation Area Nov 11, 2020 by Carl

Ski traffic has smoothed out the shallow groomer ruts from last weekend, leaving the skate lane of the Matanuska and Susitna in pretty nice, pretty fast condition. Denali loop less traveled, fresh slightly soft corduroy, still available. Classic tracks everywhere looked good.

Kincaid Park: Craig took a spin on some of the dark trails last night.  Have a wonderful day!

Hillside: High winds blew a tree down on the Gasline and Matt was out on the Spencer looking for some more.  He scratched up the Lighted Loops, Service Stadium, Spencer, Double Bubble and the Multi-Use trail. Have a great day!

Bill said the trails at Bartlett, Eagle River High School and on Yosemite Dr. have great coverage and the snow went down very nicely.  There is less coverage on the Coyote Trails at Mirror Lake Middle School but he’s packing the snow down to help with the base. Enjoy the skiing!

Archangel Road Nov 10, 2020 by Zack Steer

Packed down and groomed Archangel Road to the Reed Lakes trailhead. Lots of new snow (12"+) in the last couple days, so the going may be soft for a while. Classic tracks should hold up well if the wind does not backfill them with spindrift. It was starting to snow and blow after the sun went down. Hatcher Pass road had a couple inches old snow/slop making driving up the Pass fun. Support grooming by the Mat-Su Ski Club

Independence Mine Nov 10, 2020 by Ben

Piston Bully practice and groom. All trail groomed. Some turns on Water Tunnel Hill rough but everything else good. MSSC is preping trail for Race to Outhouse on Saturday. Training new groomers for rest of season. Support grooming by the Mat-Su Ski Club

Kincaid Park Nov 10, 2020 by Heidi

The lighted loops are a bit rougher than Hillside, but are still pretty good skating. Plenty of coverage. No classic tracks.

Government Peak Recreation Area Nov 10, 2020 by Lydia

Trails are in good condition, but the lighted loops were unlit, even by 6pm.

Beach Lake Nov 10, 2020 by redwop

Best skiing was on Hill loop where there had been no foot traffic and one bicycle track. Truck tracks from trail maintenance near the Chalet and on Swamp loop, where they were working with chain saws.
No snow in tunnels but chalet gates were open.
Wavy but didn't hit any rocks.

Skied Chester Creek Trail to APU and back this morning. Skating is totally doable on Chester Creek Trail though it hasn't seen a groomer yet. Cord started at Goose Lake and is holding up around APU trails, despite some stomping and rutting from bikes. So great to see APU trails packed, it bodes well for a good base all winter! If you lost your headlamp out there I put in a "lost and found" on Craigslist.

Kincaid Park Nov 10, 2020 by wayne

Some walkers punching up the glorious Mize yesterday. Could we request some sandwich board signs at the stadium parking lot that the trails are now ski-only?

Birch Hill Nov 10, 2020 by Max K

Big dump last Fri Nov 6th and two subsequent snowfalls have vaulted us into early season awesomeness we haven't seen in several years! Groomers are catching up with the snow and things are on the verge of being incredible. Temps in the 20s. Thanks NSCF!

Government Peak Recreation Area Nov 9, 2020 by Pat Dougherty

All trails groomed for classic and skate. 20 degrees. Very good skiing here. Support grooming by the Mat-Su Ski Club

Alaska Pacific University Nov 9, 2020 by Dave Bass

Snow machine groomed!
It’s narrow for skate skiing but doable, no tracks set. Some parts came out better than others but pretty amazing for a first pass! It’s a little rough through the swamp but cardiac hill is great! The groom extends to goose lake parking lot.
Amazing to see this packed before the Chester. Not sure I’ve ever seen that before. Thanks groomers!

Hillside Nov 9, 2020 by Ray

Great skate skiing on lighted loops, spencer was a bit soft. Great to see so many skiers out there, and to see the youth teams training. Would appreciate if the coaches can remind their youth teams of trail etiquette; moving to the side to allow others to pass, skiing in the right direction, and general awareness for others using the trails.

Chester Creek Trail Nov 9, 2020 by Larry Rundquist

No groom of upper Chester yet. There is skier set tracks, well packed bike lanes, and walkers knocking down other areas. Saw quite a few classic skiers in the 2 hrs when I had the trail in view but no skaters. Single track has had multiuse and at least one wet spot.

Hillside Nov 9, 2020 by Travis Peltier

Skiing is great today!

All main ski trails are either packed or fully groomed. Lighted loops also have classic tracks set. Spencer’s is great, though a bit soft on some corners. Swix CH8 from the spring worked well.

Richter/classic only trails and the multi-use trails have not yet been groomed.

Park Strip Nov 9, 2020 by Patrick Carnahan

Classic skied a .5 mile loop in the field from E street to I street. V45 was just a little bit slick, but it beats not skiing.

Hillside Nov 9, 2020 by JimF

Beautiful ski conditions, especially for this time of the year, at Hillside today. Fresh tracks and corduroy have been set on off the lighted trails and the gas line. Spencer and double bubble don't have tracks but they have been compacted and combed. No need for the rock skis.

Hatcher Pass Nov 9, 2020 by Ed strabel

DOT plowed the road Sunday AM but the area got hit with more snow late Sunday night. They tentatively will re-plow sometime Tuesday. Avalanche risk level is high. Snow is beginning to dry out at GPRA and the Mat-Su Ski Club is plan on packing and grooming there tonight. Support grooming by the Mat-Su Ski Club

Kincaid Park: Craig has been track packing the Mize, Margaux’s and Jodhpur with the snow machine. The park received about 4″ of dense, wet snow that packed to about 1″.  Watch for small water puddles and rough icy spots, especially in high traffic areas.  The Green Loop (SML) and the Stadium are still under construction and there is no snow in the tunnels.  Have fun out there!

Hillside: Matt has some nice snow to work with.  All the Lighted Loops, Service High and Gasline have track and Double Bubble and Spencer have been compacted and combed.  What a great way to start the week!

Beach Lake Trails - Chugiak: Bill track packed most of the trails with the snow machine and wing today.  This is a good start for base development. Please ski with caution as there are plenty of rocks and ruts still poking up.  Have fun out there!

Mat-Su Ski Club requests all skiers and pedestrians stay off the trails until the temperature drops and the snow has a chance to dry out. It will definitely improve the trail conditions. Please pass the word. Support grooming by the Mat-Su Ski Club

It snowed over a foot. It’s still snowing. We packed all the trails but did not groom. Mostly smooth even surface except on some of the turns where there are large track marks. Support grooming by the Mat-Su Ski Club

Talkeetna area Nov 8, 2020 by Jon Korta

Talkeetna received it's first real measurable snowfall of the season on Sat/Sun, a heavy wet dump of 16" as of Sunday evening. Groomers will be out this week getting trails put in, stay tuned for updates - glad to be getting an early start to the season this year! Support grooming by the Denali Nordic Ski Club

Upper Huffman Nov 8, 2020 by Mark Miner

Excellent touring on waxless skis out front range parking lots. Plenty of snow coverage. Blueberry Hollow, white spruce, gasoline all have good touring conditions.

Far North Bicentennial Park Nov 8, 2020 by Ben L Neff

Salmon Run, Moose Run, Coyote, Viewpoint Trail all great classic ski snow conditions, new thick snow and a trail packed by fat bikers. Of course now (7pm) it is raining, so hopefully new snow falls before the freeze returns.

Hatcher Pass Nov 8, 2020 by Carlene Van Tol

Park ranger was turning people around this morning due to heavy wet snow and rain coming down. You can drive to Skeetawk, but traffic being turned around before Gold Mint, near the base of 12-mile run. Lets hope things cool off and we get more snow before the cold snap returns.

Kincaid Park Nov 8, 2020 by Redwop

Let it snow! 30 degrees and coming down hard. Several inches of fresh. Broke trail with touring skis on Mize/Arlenes and didn’t bottom out.

Sand Lake Nov 8, 2020 by Jen

Skate skiing was great this morning, plenty of snow, zero rocks. Windy. No grooming.

Hatcher Pass Nov 8, 2020 by Ed Strabel

Hatcher Pass Avalanche Center reports high avalanche danger for the area. The snow stake at the lodge appears to show about 6-8 inches of fresh snow. DOT probably has not plowed the road. Mat-Su Ski Club will not be grooming up there (the mine trails and Archangel Rd), until things settle down. GPRA got about 6 inches of heavy snow and it appears to be transitioning to rain/sleet. Temperature is 31 degrees. No grooming planned until the temperature drops and the snow dries out. State Parks is now selling 2021 day use, parking passes on their web site ($60.00). Rangers and State Parks offices will not be selling them. Support grooming by the Mat-Su Ski Club

Kincaid Park: A few inches of accumulation at the park. Groomers are waiting to see how much more snow/rain comes down before they start grooming.  Have a great Sunday!

Hillside: It’s snowing on the Hillside with 4-6 inches on the ground when Matt started.  He packed the Lighted Loops to Service High, Double Bubble and Gasline.  Have fun out there!

Beach Lake Trails - Chugiak: There’s a rain/snow mix and not enough accumulation on the trails to groom. It’s wet and sticky.  Be careful out there and have a great Sunday!

Grooming Reports

In pursuit of our mission to provide a state-wide platform for all trail conditions, and to support the grooming efforts of the clubs that make those trails possible, we are excited to now include automated grooming reports provided by the Municipality of Anchorage's (MOA) Nordic Grooming Map.

When MOA, NSAA, or Girdwood NSC update the grooming status on the MOA Map, it is automatically displayed here as well. Each new grooming update is displayed as a text report, similar to our usual user reports, including the names of the trails groomed as well as any groomer comments. The groomed trails are also displayed on the map, color-coded based on how long ago they were groomed.

This is a new feature, and we'd love to get your feedback on how we can improve it. Please send me an email: cory@snowio.com And, of course, we still want to see all of your first-hand reports posted here as well!

Thank you to the Municipality of Anchorage, Nordic Skiing Association of Anchorage, and Girdwood Nordic Ski Club for making this possible! Please support these clubs' grooming efforts!

If you'd like to get your local club's grooming updates on this site (automated or otherwise), please get in touch. We'd love to make it happen!
